A hair follicle is part of the skin that grows hair by packing old cells together. Attached to the follicle is a sebaceous gland, a tiny sebum-producing gland found everywhere except on the palms, lips and soles of the feet. The thicker density of hair, the more sebaceous glands are found. Also attached to the follicle is a tiny bundle of muscle fiber called the arrector pili that is responsible for causing the follicle lissis to become more perpendicular to the surface of the skin, and causing the follicle to protrude slightly above the surrounding skin. This process results in goose bumps (or goose flesh).  Stem cells are located at the junction of the arrector and the follicle, and are principally responsible for the ongoing hair production during a process known as the Anagen stage.

Een haarzakje of haarfollikel is de functionele eenheid van een haar met omringende structuren. Daartoe behoren de haarpapil met zenuw en verzorgende bloedvaatjes, een talgkliertje en een spiertje waardoor de haar zich op kan richten b.v. bij kou (kippenvel).Haarzakjes worden vrijwel over het hele lichaamshuid teruggevonden met uitzondering van de handpalmen, voetzolen, lippen en oogleden. Ter hoogte van de saliva worden nooit haarfollikels aangetroffen. Door de verschillende soorten cycli in de haarzakjes ontstaan verschillende haarsoorten. We onderscheiden hoofdhaar, pubisbeharing (pubarche), axillaire beharing (pubonche), wenkbrauwen, wimpers, borstharen, been- en armbeharing en lichte bijna onzichtbare lichaamsbeharing elders. Kortdurende haarcycli zijn de oorzaak van kortblijvende haren, zoals wimpers en wenkbrauwen. Langerdurende cycli produceren langere haren. Dit betekent ook dat de lengte van de haren beperkt blijft tot de duur van een haarcyclus in een haarzakje. Haren kunnen daarom niet onbeperkt blijven groeien.

El folículo piloso es la parte de la piel que da crecimiento al cabello al concentrar células madre. Dentro de los folículos existen  glándulas sebáceas, destinadas a la producción del sebo que lubrica la superficie del cabello y que están distribuidas por toda la superficie de la piel con excepción de las palmas de las manos, plantas de los pies, etc. A mayor grosor del cabello, más glándulas sebáceas se encontrarán. En la base del cabello, una fina red de vasos sanguíneos forma la raíz del mismo. Alrededor de esta hay una estructura blanca llamada bulbo, visible al arrancar cabellos sanos.

Hårsäckar eller hårfolliklar finns över hela kroppen. Hårstråna växer från papillen som finns längst ned i varje hårsäck som är fylld med nerver och blodkärl. Det är hårsäcken som bestämmer hårets utseende. En rak hårsäck ger i regel rakt hår, en böjd hårsäck ger vanligtvis vågigt hår medan en spiralformad hårsäck oftast ger ett lockigt eller krulligt hår.
