haida

The Haida are an Indigenous nation of the west coast of North America. The Haida territories comprise an archipelago called Haida Gwaii, off the coast of British Columbia, and southeast of Alaska. Their main archipelago is commonly known by the European applied name, the Queen Charlotte Islands. The Haida are commonly referred to in Canada as being a First Nations "band" (not "tribe" as in American parlance). Their ancestral language is the Haida language, which has never been adequately classified by linguists because of its uniqueness. In addition to those Haida residing on Haida Gwaii and in Alaska, there are also many Haidas in various urban areas in the western United States and Canada.

Die Haida sind ein Indianervolk Nordamerikas.Ihr traditionelles Siedlungsgebiet erstreckt sich über einige Küstenregionen Britisch-Kolumbiens und des südöstlichen Alaskas. Ihre Sprache, das Haida, die heute nur noch von wenigen hundert Menschen gesprochen wird, gehört zur Na-Dené-Sprachgruppe.Die Haida-Krieger waren gefürchtet; durch ihre hochseetüchtigen Kanus waren sie vor allem auf dem Meer sehr dominant (eine Legende der Haida lässt vermuten, dass sie es schon bis nach Hawaii mit ihren Booten geschafft haben.)

Haidowie (ang. Haida) - plemię Indian Ameryki Północnej. Wraz z plemionami Tlingit, Kwakiutl, Nootka i Chilkat tworzyli społeczeństwa potlaczowe, zamieszkiwali wybrzeże północno-zachodnie na pograniczu Stanów Zjednoczonych i Kanady.W grupach tych przywódcą rodziny był mężczyzna (inaczej, niż np. u matrylinearnych Irokezów), określany jako nominalny przywódca danego obszaru na lądzie i na morzu. Typowym symbolem owych grup był słup totemiczny, usytuowany w centralnej części domu lub przed wejściem.Liczebność w roku 2000: Według danych U.S. Census Bureau, podczas spisu powszechnego w 2000 roku 14825 obywateli USA zadeklarowało, że jest pochodzenia Tlingit-Haida (w tym 1239 Haida), zaś 22365 oświadczyło, że ma pochodzenie wyłącznie lub między innymi Tlingit-Haida (w tym 4264 Haida). Niewielka liczba Indian Haida mieszka też w Kanadzie.
