A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis. Hotels often provide a number of additional guest services such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or childcare. Some hotels have conference services and meeting rooms and encourage groups to hold conventions and meetings at their location.

In French contexts an hôtel particulier is an urban "private house" of a grand sort. Whereas an ordinary maison was built as part of a row, sharing party walls with the houses on either side and directly fronting on a street, an hôtel particulier was often free-standing, and by the eighteenth century it would always be located entre cour et jardin, between the entrance court, the cour d'honneur, and the garden behind. Paris is not the only city with hôtels particuliers: see Hôtels of Montpellier, for instance.

Un albergo, o hotel, è uno stabilimento di natura commerciale che fornisce un alloggio previo pagamento, utilizzato solitamente per soggiorni di breve durata e specialmente dai turisti. Molto spesso, gli alberghi forniscono anche un alto numero di servizi per gli ospiti, come un ristorante, una piscina, nonché servizi di vario genere per bambini.
