Governor
A governor or governour (archaic) is a governing official, usually the executive (at least nominally, to different degrees also politically and administratively) of a non-sovereign level of government, ranking under the
Head of state. The title also applies to officials with a similar mandate as representatives of a
chartered company which has been granted exercise of sovereignty in a colonial area, such as the British
HEIC or the Dutch
VOC. Sometimes these companies operate as a major state within a state with its own armed forces.

Gouverneur
Gouverneur est un titre qui a désigné différentes fonctions suivant les pays et les périodes. En général, le gouverneur est la personne qui a le pouvoir exécutif civil ou militaire, ou les deux, d'une
province, d'un
État (dans le cas d'une fédération) ou d'une
colonie. Il répond le plus souvent à une autorité supérieure souvent le chef de l'État ou le gouvernement du pays pour lequel il agit.

Der Gouverneur (aus dem

russ. Губернатор (gubernator)
dt. Regent) ist der Leiter eines zivilen oder militärischen Bereichs, der sich auf ein geographisch begrenztes Gebiet bezieht. Das Wort stammt ursprünglich vom
griechischen Wort kybernétes (
Steuermann), von dem auch
Kybernetik und engl.
cyber kommen. Bei den Römern hieß die Funktion gubernator (Steuermann), woraus dann schließlich Gouverneur wurde. Dem Wortsinn nach ist ein Gouverneur somit jemand, der die Richtung vorgibt.
