Grappling refers to the gripping, handling and controlling of an opponent without the use of striking, typically through the application of various grappling holds, choke holds, and counters to various hold attempts. Grappling forms an important part of both ground fighting and standing clinch fighting. Sports that use grappling include Wrestling, Judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts. FILA uses the term grappling interchangeably with the sport of submission wrestling.

Le grappling peut être considéré comme un sport de combat consistant à attraper, à tenir, à contrôler son adversaire, debout et également au sol après une éventuelle projection, puis à tenter de le faire abandonner grâce à des techniques de luxation et d' étranglement et cela sans utiliser le moindre coup.

Słowo "grappling" (także "grapling") to neologizm pochodzący z języka angielskiego. Często używany w Polsce termin "style chwytane" jest niezgodny z polską gramatyką. Potocznie określa się te style jako "chwyciarstwo", jednakże termin ten, choć słowotwórczo poprawny, ma charakter ironiczno-żartobliwy.
