In typography, a grapheme is the fundamental unit in written language. Graphemes include alphabetic letters, Chinese characters, numerals, punctuation marks, and all the individual symbols of any of the world's writing systems.In a phonemic orthography, a grapheme corresponds to one phoneme. In spelling systems that are non-phonemic — such as the spellings used most widely for written  English — multiple graphemes may represent a single phoneme. These are called  digraphs (two graphemes for a single phoneme) and trigraphs (three graphemes). For example, the word ship contains four graphemes (s, h, i, and p) but only three phonemes, because sh is a digraph.

Grafem - to najmniejsza jednostka pisma, która często odpowiada fonemowi. Czasem jeden fonem może mieć kilka odpowiadających mu grafemów (w jęz. polskim np. rz i ż, u i ó). W alfabetach grafem jest literą lub znakiem interpunkcyjnym. Dwa grafemy składające się na jeden fonem nazywamy dygrafem (np. sz, cz, ch), a trzy - trygrafem. Kilka wariantów tego samego grafemu nazywamy allografami. To np. Ż z kropką u góry, albo z kreską Ƶ, "ł" przekreślone, albo z "daszkiem".

Con il termine grafema si indica il segno elementare e non ulteriormente suddivisibile che costituisce il linguaggio scritto, ovvero la singola lettera. Altri esempi di grafemi sono i caratteri cinesi, i numeri e la punteggiatura.La corrispondenza tra grafemi (che si riferiscono ai segni della scrittura) e fonemi (che riguardano invece l'unità elementare minima dell'aspetto sonoro della lingua, cioè del linguaggio parlato) non sempre è biunivoca: ad esempio, in italiano, il suono gn è un suono elementare, e può quindi essere riguardato come fonema, mentre non esiste alcun corrispondente segno grafico che lo individui; pertanto il gruppo di segni gn non è indicabile come grafema va più propriamente denominato digramma.
