Graffiti (singular: graffito; the plural is used as a mass noun) is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or any form of marking on property that does not belong to the artist. Graffiti is often regarded by others as unsightly damage or unwanted vandalism. Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples going back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Graffiti can be anything from simple scratch marks to elaborate wall paintings. In modern times, spray paint and markers have become the most commonly used materials. In most countries, defacing property with graffiti without the property owner's consent is considered vandalism, which is punishable by law. Sometimes graffiti is employed to communicate social and political messages. To some, it is an art form worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions. However, the public generally frowns upon "tags" that deface bus stops, trains, buildings, playgrounds and other public property.

Un graffiti est une inscription calligraphiée ou un dessin tracé, peint ou gravé sur un support qui n'est normalement pas prévu à cet effet.Le graffiti dans ses formes les plus élaborées est également une forme d'art graphique. Le graffiti désigne aussi aujourd'hui une forme dérivée de cet art exercé sur les biens publics ou sur le mobilier urbain.

Graffiti, Einzahl Graffito, steht als Sammelbegriff für privat angebrachte Bilder bzw. Schriftzüge auf Oberflächen des öffentlichen Raums. Il Graffiti Writing, spesso erroneamente definito Graffitismo, è una manifestazione sociale, culturale e artistica diffusa in tutto il pianeta, basata sull'espressione della propria creatività tramite interventi sul tessuto urbano. Correlata ad essa sono gli atti dello scrivere il proprio nome d'arte (tag) diffondendolo come fosse un logo. Il fenomeno prende le mosse dalla pittura murale (murales - disegni su muro), e viene spesso associato ad atti di vandalismo, poiché numerosi adepti utilizzano come supporti espressivi mezzi pubblici o edifici di interesse storico e artistico. Generalmente, il nocciolo di writer più vicini ad un serio lavoro di ricerca artistica considerano tali attività deprecabili, dimostrando anche nella scelta del supporto per la pittura una maggiore responsabilità e consapevolezza. Resta tuttavia una gran quantità di adolescenti, chiamati nello slang sucker, poser, scarsi, scrausi, estimatori, rimastini e quant'altro, che producono solamente trafile di tag, o al massimo throw ups (ovvero tag più elaborate eseguibili in breve tempo) al fine di promuovere il loro nome. Uno tra i più influenti writer della storia e teorico del movimento aerosol art italiano, Phase II, scriveva nel 1999 in un articolo su Aelle, rivista specializzata ora non più alle stampe, "...throw-up: spingere il proprio nome oppure vomito?".
