Gothic rock (sometimes called goth rock or simply goth) is a genre of rock music that originated during the late 1970s. Originally bands from the genre were referred to as positive-punk by the music press and had strong ties to the English punk rock and emerging post-punk styles.

Historiquement, le rock gothique est né à Londres sur les cendres du mouvement punk, avec des groupes comme Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure et Joy Division, groupes contemporains du punk-rock incarnés par les Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks , Generation X (etc.)au Royaume-Uni en 1977-1979. Tandis que ces derniers pratiquaient rock agressif et extraverti, les groupes goths étaient plus introvertis et personnels. Le rock Gothique a seulement commencé à être défini comme mouvement avec l'apparition de Bauhaus en 1979 puis avec le mouvement Batcave, Sisters of Mercy.

Gothic Rock (lub gotycki rock) - gatunek w muzyce rockowej charakteryzujący się melodyjnymi, zazwyczaj prostymi utworami utrzymanymi w molowej tonacji, w niektórych przypadkach sięgający do muzyki operowej depresyjnym klimatem, tekstami o treści egzystencjalnej, często nawiązującymi do legend, mitologii germańskiej i słowiańskiej, powieści i filmów grozy. Pokrewne mu są takie gatunki jak gothic metal,  cold wave, dark wave, doom metal, postpunk, neofolk a także rock progresywny czy industrial i noise. Nazwa gatunku pochodzi od powieści gotyckiej XIX wieku, a pośrednio od średniowiecznego stylu gotyckiego w architekturze.

Gothic rock (även goth rock eller bara goth) är en musikgenre inom rocken med ursprung i sent 1970-tal. Till en början var gothic rock en etikett som tilldelades en handfull punk- och post-punkgrupper men i början av 1980-talet utkristalliserades en separat riktning. I kontrast till den musikaliskt och expressivt aggressiva punken utmärkte sig de tidiga gothic rock-banden av en mer introspektiv, mörk tematik med intellektuella influenser från gotisk litteratur, romantiken, existentialismen och nihilismen. Några band som exemplifierar stilen är Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Sisters of Mercy och Fields of the Nephilim.
