In football, the goalkeeper occupies a position that represents the last line of defense between the opponent's offense and his own team's goal. The primary role of the goalkeeper is to defend his team's goal and prevent the opposition from scoring a goal. The goalkeeper is the only player who is permitted to touch the ball with his hands or arms in open play. Each team is required to have a goalkeeper on the field at all times during a match. If a goalkeeper is forced to leave the field due to injury or being sent off, another player must occupy the post, even if the team has no substitute goalkeeper available and/or has used up its allotted substitutions.

Au football, le gardien de but (autres appellations : gardien, goal, portier) est le joueur évoluant la plupart du temps dans la surface de réparation de son équipe. Il est chargé de protéger son but de manière à ce que le ballon n'en franchisse pas la ligne et peut pour ce faire utiliser tout son corps, y compris ses bras et ses mains, contrairement aux autres joueurs. Cependant, comme le gardien a le droit d'évoluer sur tout le terrain, il n'a ce privilège qu'à l'intérieur de sa surface de réparation. Si ce dernier touche le ballon — volontairement ou non — de la main ou du bras en dehors de la suface de réparation, il est, à l'appréciation de l'arbitre, susceptible d'écoper d’un carton rouge, ou d’un carton jaune à condition que l'arbitre juge ce geste comme difficilement évitable.
