A global city (also called world city or sometimes alpha city or world center) is a city generally considered to be an important node in the global economic system. The concept comes from geography and urban studies and rests on the idea that globalization can be understood as largely created, facilitated and enacted in strategic geographic locales according to a hierarchy of importance to the operation of the global system of finance and trade.

Als Global City (deutsch etwa Globalstadt) werden Städte bezeichnet, die im Zentrum eines neuartigen, transnationalen Städtesystems stehen. In ihnen sind die wichtigsten Finanzmärkte, Zentralen von Banken und Transnationalen Konzernen sowie unternehmensnahe Dienstleistungen wie Rechts-, Finanz- und Unternehmensberater, Werbeagenturen, Buchführungs- und Prüfungsfirmen konzentriert. Der Begriff wurde in den 1990er Jahren von der Stadtsoziologin Saskia Sassen geprägt.

Als Weltstadt werden Städte von überragender globaler Bedeutung bezeichnet. Eine Weltstadt besitzt zentrale Bedeutung für große Teile der Welt, auf politischem, wirtschaftlichem oder kulturellem Gebiet.

Une ville de classe mondiale correspond à un concept de ville défini en 1999 par le département de géographie de l'Université de Loughborough avec une série de caractéristiques dues aux effets de la mondialisation et à la constante croissance de l'urbanisation. Elles se reconnaissent ainsi car elles ont laissé une histoire particulière et précise. Aussi, elles ont été et demeurent encore au les principaux pôles commerciaux du globe.
