gilding

Gilding is the art of applying metal leaf (most commonly gold or silver leaf) to a surface. This art was known to the ancients. According to Herodotus, the Egyptians were accustomed to gilding wood and metals; and gilding by means of gold plates is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament. Pliny the Elder informs us that the first gilding seen at Rome was after the destruction of Carthage, under the censorship of Lucius Mummius, when the Romans began to gild the ceilings of their temples and palaces, the Capitol being the first place on which this process was used. But he adds that luxury advanced on them so rapidly that in very little time you might see all, even private and poor people, gild the walls, vaults, and other parts of their dwellings. Owing to the comparative thickness of the gold leaf used in ancient gilding, the traces of it which yet remain are remarkably brilliant and solid.

Depuis l'Antiquité, et notamment les Égyptiens, il a été d'usage de rehausser les objets d'art, de culte, ou précieux, en les recouvrant d'or. Ce métal, le seul à l'époque à avoir la particularité de ne pas s'oxyder, était symbole d'immortalité, et donc du divin.

Als Vergolden bezeichnet man das Überziehen metallischer und nichtmetallischer Gegenstände mit Gold.Durch seine Eigenschaft als Edelmetall ist Gold eines der korrosionsbeständigsten Metalle. In reiner Form ist Gold aber als Grundwerkstoff für Bauteile und Alltagsgegenstände nur schlecht geeignet und zwar aus zwei Gründen: Es ist wegen seiner Seltenheit sehr teuer, und es hat eine geringe Festigkeit, d.h. es ist sehr weich und lässt sich leicht deformieren. So wird klar, dass es schon immer ein Interesse gegeben hat, Gegenstände aus leicht verfügbaren und alltagstauglichen Materialien mit einer Goldschicht zu überziehen.

Pozłotnictwo - rzemiosło artystyczne zajmujące się pokrywaniem podłoża metalami, zwykle szlachetnymi.Do pozłotnictwa nie zalicza się technik stosowanych w jubilerstwie i metaloplastyce, np. złocenia ogniowego, galwanicznego czy platerowania. Również stosowane współcześnie złote farby w sprayu i w płynie nie zaliczają się do klasycznego pozłotnictwa.

Vergulden is het bedekken van een voorwerp met een laagje goud.Verscheidene antieke beschavingen beheersten al de kunst van het vergulden (Egyptenaren, Etrusken, Kelten, ...).Er zijn veel uiteenlopende technieken voor vergulden. Veel gebruikt voor b.v. schilderijlijsten is het inleggen van bladgoud in mixion. Voor een goede hechting en hoogglans wordt in de regel met een agaat gebruineerd. Metalen kunnen in gesmolten goud worden ondergedompeld of galvanisch worden verguld. De van oorsprong Koreaanse techniek Keum Boo, waarbij vrij dik goudfolie wordt versmolten met het oppervlak van zilveren of stalen voorwerpen, wordt geleidelijk populairder bij westerse goud- en zilversmeden. Op keramiek kan fijn goudpoeder in olie-achtige dispersie aangebracht worden, bij het bakken verbrandt de olie en smelten de gouddeeltjes samen. In plaats van goudpoeder worden ook wel goudzouten gebruikt, die door reductie in de oven omgezet worden tot zuiver goud.
