ghetto

A ghetto is an area where people from a specific racial or ethnic background live as a group in seclusion, voluntarily or involuntarily. The word was originally used to refer to the Venetian Ghetto in Venice, Italy, where Jews were required to live. The corresponding German term was Judengasse. In Moroccan Arabic, ghettos were called mellah. The term came into widespread use during World War II to refer to Nazi ghettos.

Le ghetto désigne un quartier réservé ou imposé aux juifs où ils peuvent vivre selon leurs lois et coutumes particulières au milieu de peuples étrangers. C'est dans la République de Venise, en 1526, que ce quartier a pour la première fois été appelé ghetto, après que le Conseil des Dix a décidé de regrouper leur communauté à Cannaregio, site occupé par une ancienne fonderie (en italien geto signifie « fusion »). Le mot ghetto pourrait aussi provenir de la racine hébraïque ghet signifiant « séparation ».

Getto (wł. ghetto - pierwotne znaczenie wyrazu huta, odlewnia) - odizolowane miejsce wybrane dla zamieszkania mniejszości narodowej, kulturowej bądź religijnej, poza którym nie wolno tejże społeczności zamieszkiwać; począwszy od średniowiecza przez getto rozumiano wydzielony obszar miasta, w którym przymusowo osiedlano Żydów, lub przedstawicieli innych narodów. Getto zazwyczaj otoczone jest murem strzeżonym od zewnątrz, współcześnie zazwyczaj dodatkowo zabezpieczonym zasiekami z drutu kolczastego lub jak w Strefie Gazy także urządzeniami elektronicznymi. Getto jest zazwyczaj całkowicie zależne od dostaw żywności oraz energii z zewnątrz.
