A getter is a deposit of reactive material that is placed inside a vacuum system, for the purpose of completing and maintaining the vacuum. When gas molecules strike the getter material, they combine with it chemically or by adsorption. Thus the getter removes small amounts of gas from the evacuated space.

Ein Getter ist ein chemisch reaktives Material, das dazu dient, ein Vakuum möglichst lange zu erhalten. An der Oberfläche eines Getters gehen Gasmoleküle mit den Atomen des Gettermaterials eine direkte chemische Verbindung ein oder die Gasmoleküle werden durch Sorption festgehalten. Auf diese Weise werden Gasmoleküle „eingefangen“.

Getter, inaczej geter. Jest to substancja umieszczana we wnętrzu przyrządu próżniowego np. lampy elektronowej. Jego zadanie to utrzymywanie w danym przyrządzie próżni, przez pochłanianie resztek gazów (zarówno tych pozostałych przy produkcji, jak i mogących się wytwarzać podczas pracy urządzenia). Gazy są niepożądane w przyrządach próżniowych, ponieważ powodują ich szybsze zużycie oraz pogarszają parametry pracy. W lampach elektronowych małej mocy jako getter stosuje się zwykle bar lub jego stop naniesiony na ściankę bańki (w postaci lustrzanej "plamy").
