genus (biology)

A genus (plural: genera) is part of the Latinized name for an organism. It is a name which reflects the classification of the organism by grouping it with other closely similar organisms. A genus is a category name that is given to every species in a group of species which are closely related to one another. Ideally the same generic name is given to species which are all descended from a common ancestor. In other words, a genus is a low-level taxonomic unit, used in the classification of living and fossil organisms.

Die Gattung, (auch: Genus) ist eine hierarchische Stufe der biologischen Systematik und enthält eine oder mehrere Arten. Ein Beispiel einer Gattung ist Abies (Tannen).Alle Arten innerhalb einer Gattung haben immer einen zweiteiligen (binominalen) Namen, der neben der Gattungsbezeichnung noch ein Art-Epitheton enthält. Abies alba (die Weißtanne) ist eine Art in der Gattung Abies (Tannen). Diese durchgehend binominale Benennung geht auf Carl von Linné zurück, der sie 1735 in seinem Werk Systema Naturae einführte.

Rodzaj (łac. genus) - obowiązkowa kategoria systematyczna, której nazwa wchodzi w skład nazwy gatunkowej i jest niezbędna do jednoznacznego jego określenia. Do rodzaju zaliczany jest gatunek lub monofiletyczna grupa gatunków (Wiley, 1981). Nazwa rodzaju jest rzeczownikiem w mianowniku liczby pojedynczej, pochodzącym z greki, łaciny lub zlatynizowania z innego języka. Po nazwie podawane jest nazwisko autora i - oddzielona przecinkiem - data pierwszej publikacji, np. Cardinalis Bonaparte, 1838.Wyższą kategorią podstawową jest rodzina, niższą gatunek. Nazwę rodzajową łacińską piszemy zawsze wielką literą i krojem pisma odróżniającym ją od pozostałego tekstu, a identycznym z krojem epitetu gatunkowego, jeśli wchodzi w skład nazwy gatunku.
