Generał (pronounced ) is the generic Polish language term for the rank of General. In narrow sense it is used to denote the rank of a Four-star general introduced on August 15, 2002. It is currently the highest military rank of the Polish Army, with the rank of Marshal of Poland currently being unused. The symbols of the rank are the wężyk generalski (pronounced ), or "general's wavy line", and four stars, featured both on the rogatywka, sleeves of the uniform and above the breast pocket of a field uniform.

General, Plural Generale oder Generäle, bezeichnet im Militär einerseits den Sammelbegriff für die höchste Dienstgradgruppe, die Generalität, andererseits in den meisten Nationen den im Frieden höchsten Dienstgrad bei Heer und Luftwaffe. Generał - wysoki oficerski stopień wojskowy, a także grupa stopni generalskich. Nazwa pochodzi z łacińskiego generalis (główny, nadrzędny) i oznaczała początkowo głównego dowódcę wojska lub konkretnego rodzaju broni. W tym znaczeniu, stopień generała, jako naczelnego dowódcy całej armii państwa, zachował się obecnie jedynie w Szwajcarii.

General - trzeci stopień generalski sił lądowych i powietrznych Wehrmachtu. Jego odpowiednikiem w wojsku polskim jest generał broni, w Kriegsmarine jego odpowiednikiem był Admiral. Stopień ten zawsze wystepował z dopiskiem rodzaju broni, na przykład: generał artylerii.

Generaal is een hoge, in veel landen de hoogste, militaire rang. De titel wordt gebruikt in de landmacht en soms in de luchtmacht. In zeemachten is de titel equivalent aan de rang admiraal. De generaal is een viersterrenfunctie en kent doorgaans nog twee lagere gradaties: luitenant-generaal (drie sterren) en generaal-majoor (twee sterren). Sommige landen, zoals Nederland, kennen nog een brigadegeneraal (1 ster). Enkele landen kennen hogere rangen zoals de maarschalk (maarschalksstaf als onderscheiding) of een vijfsterrengeneraal (general of the army).In het Duitse leger bestond tot 1945 ook de rang van Generaloberst (Kolonel-generaal).
