A gamete (from Ancient Greek γαμετης; translated gamete = wife, gametes = husband) is a cell that fuses with another gamete during fertilisation (conception) in organisms that reproduce sexually. In species which produce two morphologically distinct types of gametes, and in which each individual produces only one type, a female is any individual which produces the larger type of gamete—called an ovum (or egg)—and a male produces the smaller type—called a spermatozoon (or sperm cell). This is an example of anisogamy or heterogamy, the condition wherein females and males produce gametes of different sizes. In contrast, isogamy is the state of gametes from both sexes being the same size. The name gamete was introduced by the Austrian biologist Gregor Mendel.

Gameten, auch bekannt als Geschlechtszellen oder Keimzellen, sind haploide Zellen, die von sich geschlechtlich fortpflanzenden Organismen meist in besonderen Organen erzeugt werden. Der Geschlechtsvorgang besteht aus einer Verschmelzung von zwei Gameten und wird Gametogamie genannt. Das Verschmelzungsprodukt nennt man Zygote.

Może uczestniczyć w procesie zapłodnienia łącząc się z gametą innej płci i tworząc zygotę.U większości organizmów wyróżnia się dwa typy komórek płciowych, nazywane + i -, gdy morfologicznie się nie różnią (izogamia) lub męską i żeńską, gdy jedna z nich (plemnik, powstaje w gonadach męskich - jądrach) jest ruchliwa lecz uboga w materiały zapasowe, a druga (komórka jajowa, powstaje w gonadach żeńskich - jajnikach) - przeciwnie (oogamia). Wyróżnia się też sytuację pośrednią, gdy oba rodzaje komórek są ruchliwe, lecz komórki jednego typu są większe - makrogamety - od innych - mikrogamet (anizogamia).

Un gamete è una cellula riproduttiva o germinale matura, maschile (spermatozoo) o femminile (ovocita o cellula uovo), con contenuto cromosomico aploide, cioè dimezzato, atto all'unione con un altro gamete. Essi sono prodotti dalle ghiandole sessuali, o gonadi, e in genere variano considerevolmente di dimensioni nei due sessi. Si chiama isogamia il caso in cui abbiano dimensioni uguali, per esempio in alcuni funghi. Più spesso il gamete maschile è più piccolo di quello femminile (anisogamia); inoltre il primo è in genere mobile, grazie a flagelli che permettono lo spostamento verso il secondo, immobile. Dall'unione dei due gameti si forma l'uovo fecondato, dal quale si svilupperà un nuovo individuo, con i caratteri della specie di origine. Negli animali il gamete maschile è chiamato spermatozoo, quello femminile ovulo. Nei vegetali si da anche il nome di anterozoide all'elemento riproduttore maschile, e di oosfera all'elemento riproduttore femminile.
