The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a  domesticated fowl, a subspecies of the Red Junglefowl. As one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, and with a population of more than 24 billion in 2003, there are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming both their meat and their eggs. The chicken's "cultural and culinary dominance" could be considered amazing to some in view of its believed domestic origin and purpose and it has "inspired contributions to culture, art, cuisine, science and religion" from antiquity to the present.

Das Haushuhn (Gallus gallus domesticus) ist eine Zuchtform des Bankivahuhns, eines Wildhuhns aus Südostasien, und gehört zur Familie der Fasanenartigen (Phasianidae). Landwirtschaftlich zählen sie zum Geflügel. Das männliche Haushuhn nennt man Hahn oder Gockel, den kastrierten Hahn Kapaun. Das Weibchen heißt Huhn oder Henne, Jungtiere führende Hennen Glucke. Die Jungtiere heißen allgemein Kü(c)ken.

Cet animal est élevé à la fois pour sa chair dans quel cas le terme générique pour le désigner est volaille, pour ses œufs, et parfois pour ses plumes. Kura domowa (Gallus gallus domesticus) - ptak hodowlany z rodziny kurowatych, hodowany na całym świecie. W środowisku naturalnym nie występuje. Uważa się, że stanowi formę udomowioną kura bankiwa (Gallus gallus), lecz nie wyklucza się domieszki innych gatunków południowoazjatyckich kuraków (zarówno żyjących, jak i wymarłych). Udomowienie miało prawdopodobnie miejsce w III tysiącleciu p.n.e. w Indiach. Około 1000 p.n.e. kury hodowano już w Chinach, a ok. 500 p.n.e. w Egipcie i Europie, w tym w Polsce (odnaleziono kości kur podczas wykopalisk w Biskupinie). W tym okresie w Chinach prowadzono już sztuczne wylęganie. Jak wykazały badania, ówczesne kury przypominały dzisiejsze kury bezrasowe, lecz miały lepiej rozwinięte skrzydła. Badania dowodzą, że kury potrafiły kiedyś latać (20 mln lat temu), lecz w wyniku ewolucji i zwężenia kości lędźwiowo-prostych, oraz udomowienia straciły tę możliwosć. Kury mogą żyć nawet do 40 lat, zaś samce zazwyczaj nie dożywają 15 roku życia.
