Gana
The word (
Devanagari: ), in
Sanskrit, means "flock, troop, multitude, number, tribe, series, class" (
Monier Williams's dictionary). It can also be used to refer to a "body of attendants" and can refer to "a company, any assemblage or association of men formed for the attainment of the same aims". In
Hinduism, the s (
Devanagari: ) are attendants of
Shiva and live in
Kailasa.
Ganesha was chosen as their leader by Shiva, hence
Ganesha's title or , "lord of the ". The word "gana" can also refer to councils or assemblies convened to discuss matters of religion or other topics.

Gana (Sk) [from the verbal root gan to count] A group, flock, troop, multitude, number, class, etc.; in the plural used for troops or classes of inferior deities (devatas), considered as Siva's attendants, and under special superintendence of the god Ganesa (often used in the compound forms Ganadevata or Ganadevas). These celestial beings are said to inhabit maharloka: "They are the rulers of our Kalpa (Cycle) and therefore termed Kalpadhikarins, or Lords of the Kalpas. They last only 'One Day' of Brahma" (TG 124).
Also a series of asterisms or lunar mansions placed in three classes: that of the gods, men, and rakshasas.
