Genotype describes the genetic constitution of an individual, that is the specific allelic makeup of an individual, usually with reference to a specific character under consideration . For instance, there are three possible genotypes for the human albino gene, and it has two allelic forms, dominant A and recessive a. Thus the three possible genotypes are AA (homozygous dominant), Aa (heterozygous), and aa (homozygous recessive).

Le génotype est l'ensemble ou une partie donnée de la composition génétique (information génétique) d'un individu (Johannsen, 1909). Le génotype d'un individu est donc la composition allèlique de tous les gènes d'un individu. La définition de génotype sert également lorsque l'on considère la composition allélique d'un individu pour un nombre restreint de gènes d'intérêt. Par exemple, s'il existe deux formes du gène X: l'allèle Xa et l'allèle Xb, alors le génotype d'un individu pour le gène X peut-être soit homozygote ( Xa/Xa ou Xb/Xb) soit hétérozygote (Xa/Xb). L'homme possède deux copies de chaque gène, donc potentiellement 2 allèles différents, au maximum.

Der Genotyp oder das Erbbild eines Organismus repräsentiert seine exakte genetische Ausstattung, also den individuellen Satz von Genen, den er im Zellkern in sich trägt. Der Begriff Genotyp wurde 1909 von dem dänischen Genetiker Wilhelm Johannsen geprägt.Die genetische Information der gesamten Zelle wird als Idiotyp (Idiotypus) bezeichnet. Zwei Organismen, deren Gene sich auch nur an einem Locus (der Position in ihrem Genom) unterscheiden, haben einen unterschiedlichen Genotyp. Der Begriff "Genotyp" bezieht sich also auf die vollständige Kombination aller Allele / aller Loci eines Organismus. Beim Phänotyp eines Organismus dagegen handelt es sich um seine tatsächlichen körperlichen Merkmale wie Größe, Gewicht, Haarfarbe usw. Der Genotyp ändert sich zu Lebzeiten eines Organismus nicht, ausgenommen durch Unfälle wie z.B. den Einfluss von radioaktiver α-, β-, und γ-Strahlung oder durch Temperaturschocks.

Genotyp - zespół genów danego osobnika warunkujących jego właściwości dziedziczne. Jest to sparowany układ alleli (często myli się go z genomem, czyli składem genetycznym danego organizmu). Można go wyrazić symbolicznie za pomocą oznaczeń aa, AA lub Aa, gdzie aa i AA oznaczają homozygotę pod względem tego genu, a Aa oznacza heterozygotę.
