GÉANT is the main European multi-gigabit computer network for research and education purposes. GÉANT link speeds range from 155 Mbit/s on the slowest spur links to 10 Gbit/s in the core optical fiber network.The GÉANT project began in November 2000, entered full production operation in December 2001 (fully replacing TEN-155). Originally due to finish in October 2004, it was subsequently extended until April 2005. The project to plan, procure, build and operate the next generation of the network was named GÉANT2 and it began in September 2004.

GÉANT ist das pan-europäische Internet-Verbindungsnetzwerk der europäischen Forschung. Es verbindet derzeit 26 nationale Forschungsnetze, darunter das DFN, mittels exklusiv reservierter Multi-Gigabit-Leitungen. Der Name entspricht dem französischen Wort "Géant", auf deutsch "Gigant".Das Kernnetz basiert auf 10GBit-Leitungen, die geringsten Geschwindigkeiten liegen bei 155Mbit. Das Projekt wurde im November 2000 gegründet und es ist seit Dezember 2001 in vollem Betrieb, wobei es das ältere TEN-155 ersetzte. Nach den ursprünglichen Planungen sollte das Projekt bis Oktober 2004 laufen, es wurde dann jedoch bis April 2005 verlängert, und gleichzeitig wurde im September 2004 mit dem Nachfolgeprojekt Géant2 begonnen.

GÉANT - główna europejska sieć komputerowa przeznaczona dla badań i edukacji, użytkowana przez ok. 3 mln naukowców z 3500 ośrodków badawczych. Szybkość łączy wynosi od 155 Mbit/s do 10 Gbit/s (łącza światłowodowe).Projekt GÉANT wystartował w listopadzie 2000 r. i stał się w pełni operacyjny w grudniu 2001 r., zastępując TEN-155). Od września 2004 rozwijana jest następna generacja sieci, GÉANT2 - modernizacja polega na użyciu tzw. "ciemnych" światłowodów o teoretycznej przepustowości 320 Gbit/s. Geant2 pozwoli naukowcom łączyć się bezpośrednio z centrum CERN (Genewa), w którym trwa budowa największego na świecie akceleratora wiązek protonów LHC (Large Hadron Collider).

As ligações de GÉANT variam entre os 155 Mbit/s através dos equipamentos mais antigos até 10 Gbit/s através de ligações de fibra óptica.O projecto GÉANT começou em Novembro de 2000, ficando totalmente operacional em Dezembro de 2001 (substituição total TEN-155). Deveria estar pronto em Outubro de 2004, mas o prazo foi estendido até Abril de 2005. O plano para, adquirir, construir e operar a próxima geração da rede foi nomeado GÉANT2 e começou em Setembro de 2004.
