The fungi are heterotrophic organisms characterized by a chitinous cell wall, and in the majority of species, filamentous growth as multicellular hyphae forming a mycelium; some fungal species also grow as single cells. Sexual and asexual reproduction is via spores, often produced on specialized structures or in fruiting bodies. Yeasts, molds, and mushrooms are examples of fungi. Fungi are more closely related to animals than plants, yet the discipline of biology devoted to the study of fungi, known as mycology often falls under a branch of botany.

Le règne des Mycota, ou mycètes, est également appelé règne des Fungi. Il constitue un taxon regroupant les organismes appelés plus communément champignons. La mycologie est la science qui les étudie. Environ espèces de champignons ont été décrites à ce jour, mais on estime qu'en 2007 moins de 10 % des espèces sont connues et identifiées.

Grzyby (Mycota, Mycetes, Fungi (w l. poj. Fungus)) - królestwo należące do organizmów eukariotycznych, w zależności od ujęcia systematycznego w randze królestwa lub podkrólestwa. Istnienie grzybów zaobserwowano we wszystkich strefach klimatycznych, przede wszystkim na lądach, rzadziej w wodach.Do tej pory opisano ok. 120 tysięcy gatunków grzybów. Szacuje się, że co roku charakteryzuje się średnio 1700 nowych gatunków grzybów. Korzystając z danych uzyskanych z obszarów, na których rozpoznano większość organizmów żywych, przypuszcza się, że istnieje ok. 1,5 miliona gatunków grzybów (5 razy więcej niż roślin nasiennych).
