Free trade is a policy by which a government does not discriminate against imports or interfere with exports by applying tariffs (to imports) or subsidies (to exports) or quotas. According to the law of comparative advantage the policy permits trading partners mutual gains from trade of goods and services.

Als Freihandel bezeichnet man einen internationalen Handel (Außenhandel), der nicht durch Handelshemmnisse wie Zölle oder Import-Kontingente eingeschränkt ist. Die Idee des Freihandels basiert auf dem klassischen Wirtschaftsliberalismus. Eine daraufhin ausgerichtete Wirtschaftspolitik bezeichnet man als Freihandelspolitik, eine dem Freihandel entgegengesetzte Politik als Protektionismus. Da Freihandel allein den internationalen Handel (Außenhandel) zwischen souveränen Staaten betrifft, bezeichnet man den freien Handel (Verkehr) mit Waren, Kapital u. a. innerhalb von Bundesstaaten u. Ä., die verfassungsmäßig einen Binnenmarkt haben (z. B. USA, EU, Deutschland u. a.) nicht als „Freihandel“, sondern als „Binnenhandel“.

Le libre-échange est un système de commerce international reposant sur l'absence de barrières douanières et non douanières à la circulation des biens et des services. Au sens strict, la notion ne s'étend pas aux mouvements de travailleurs ou de capitaux.

Frihandel är handel som inte regleras av tullar, importkvoter eller andra asymmetriska handelspolitiska åtgärder. Motsatsen till frihandel är protektionism. Ända sedan David Ricardo lanserade teorin om komparativa fördelar har det i princip funnits ett konsensus bland nationalekonomer att hinder för handel alltid är dåligt för alla inblandade ekonomier.

Il liberismo è una teoria economica che prevede la libera iniziativa e il libero commercio (abolizione dei dazi) mentre l'intervento dello Stato nell'economia si limita al massimo alla costruzione di adeguate infrastrutture (strade, ferrovie ecc.) che possano favorire il commercio.
