For other uses of the term, see Fossil (disambiguation) FOSSIL is a standard for allowing serial communication for telecommunications programs under the DOS operating system. FOSSIL is an acronym for Fido Opus Seadog Standard Interface Layer.A "FOSSIL" driver is simply a communications device driver. They exist because in the early days of Fidonet, computer hardware was very diverse and there were no standards on how software was to communicate with the serial interface hardware. Initial development of FidoBBS only worked on a specific type of machine. Before FidoBBS could start spreading, it was seen that a uniform method of communicating with serial interface hardware was needed if the software was going to be used on other machines. This need was also apparent for other communications based software. The FOSSIL specification was born so as to provide this uniform method. Software using the FOSSIL standard could communicate using the same interrupt functions no matter what hardware it was running on.

Fossils (from Latin fossus, literally "having been dug up") are the mineralized or otherwise preserved remains or traces (such as footprints) of animals, plants, and other organisms. Un fossile (dérivé du substantif du verbe latin fodere : fossile, littéralement « qui est fouillé ») est le reste (coquille, os, dent, graine, feuilles...) ou le simple moulage d'un animal ou d'un végétal conservé dans une roche sédimentaire. Als Fossil (von lat. fossilis „(aus)gegraben“) früher auch Petrefakt genannt, bezeichnet man jedes Zeugnis vergangenen Lebens aus der Erdgeschichte.Derartige erdgeschichtliche Dokumente können sowohl körperliche Überreste (Körperfossilien) als auch Zeugnisse der Aktivität von Lebewesen (Spurenfossilien) sein, die älter als 10.000 Jahre sind und sich somit einem geologischen Zeitalter vor dem Beginn des Holozäns zuordnen lassen. In der Biologie und Paläontologie werden die Arten, die bis zur Wende Pleistozän/Holozän ausstarben als fossil bezeichnet und den rezenten Arten gegenüber gestellt, denjenigen also, die heute noch leben oder erst im Laufe des Holozäns ausstarben.

Skamieniałości (skamieliny)Zachowane w skałach szczątki organizmów (skamieniałości właściwe, strukturalne), a także ślady ich aktywności życiowej (skamieniałości śladowe), starsze niż 100 tys. lat. Skamieniałości powstają w wyniku procesu fosylizacji. Najczęściej fosylizacji ulegają tylko części szkieletowe. Proces ten zachodzi w wyniku zastąpienia pierwotnej substancji budującej części twarde organizmu innymi związkami mineralnymi (najczęściej węglanem wapnia lub krzemionką, a rzadziej np. dolomitem, syderytem, limonitem, pirytem lub fosforanami) o tym samym składzie chemicznym (np. przejście aragonitu w bardziej stabilny kalcyt) lub odmiennym składzie chemicznym. W przypadku części twardych zbudowanych ze stabilnych substancji (np. kalcytu, krzemionki) zachowują się one czasami bez żadnych przekształceń.

Il termine fossile (dal latino fodere, scavare) in paleontologia abitualmente viene usato per indicare resti integri o parziali di organismi un tempo viventi, più in generale viene usato per una qualsiasi testimonianza di vita geologicamente passata (antecedente all'epoca attuale) quali uova, evidenze di attività' vitale (orme, tane, tracce legate all'alimentazione, coproliti ecc.).
