As a piece of cutlery or kitchenware, a fork is a tool consisting of a handle with several narrow tines on one end. The fork, as an eating utensil, has been a feature primarily of the West, whereas in East Asia chopsticks have been more prevalent. Today, forks are increasingly available throughout East Asia. The utensil (usually metal) is used to lift food to the mouth or to hold food in place while cooking or cutting it. Food can be lifted either by spearing it on the tines, or by holding it on top of the tines, which are often curved slightly. For this latter function, in the American style of fork etiquette, the fork is held with tines curving up; however, in continental style, the fork is held with the tines curving down. A fork is also shaped in the form of a trident but curved at the joint of the handle to the points.

In computing, when a process forks, it creates a copy of itself. Under Unix and Unix-like operating systems, the parent and the child processes can tell each other apart by examining the return value of the fork() system call. In the child process, the return value of fork() is 0, whereas the return value in the parent process is the PID of the newly created child process.

Beim Systemaufruf Fork erzeugt der aktuelle Prozess eine Kopie von sich selbst, welche dann als Kindprozess des erzeugenden Programmes läuft. Der Kindprozess übernimmt die Daten, den Maschinencode und den Befehlszähler vom Elternprozess und erhält vom Betriebssystem (wie der Elternprozess und jeder andere Prozess auch) eine eigene Prozessnummer, die PID (engl. "Process IDentifier"). In der Folge verwaltet das Betriebssystem den Kindprozess als eigenständige Instanz des Programms und führt ihn unabhängig vom Elternprozess aus.

Fork est un mot anglais signifiant « fourche », « fourchette ». Il vient du mot latin furca (qui est également à l'origine de plusieurs mots en français comme bifurcation), via le normano-picard forque. C'est souvent dans ce sens figuré « d'embranchement », de « différenciation » qu'est employé cet anglicisme en informatique. Il désigne donc un objet (au sens large, cela peut être un projet) ayant une racine commune avec un second. Ces deux objets jumeaux au départ après s'être séparés suivent une évolution propre, différente.

La fourchette est un couvert de table ou un ustensile de cuisine permettant d'attraper les aliments, sans les toucher directement avec les doigts.

Det amerikanska ordet fork (gaffel) används ibland i betydelsen avknoppning eller avgrening av programvaruprojekt. Det kan exempelvis handla om en stark grupp som vill driva ett projekt med öppen källkod åt ett annat håll än majoriteten inom projektet. Denna grupp utgår då normalt från en kopia på källkoden och fortsätter jobba efter sina egna principer, utan att nödvändigtvis följa moderprojektets policy och designprinciper.

fork är ett centralt systemanrop i unixliknande system. Systemanropet skapar en ny process som en kopia av den anropande processen (moderprocessen). Detta är det sätt på vilket nya proceser skapas i Unix.

Gaffeln är ett bestick som används vid förtärning av mat. Det användes av antikens greker och romare men etablerades i Italien på 1100-talet genom Bysantinska rikets hov. Gaffeln är huvudsakligen spridd i Europa, Nordamerika och Sydamerika. I Asien har ätpinnar använts mer flitigt, även om gafflar ökar i popularitet. Gaffeln har generellt två, tre eller fyra spetsar. De äldsta gafflarna man har hittat har hittats gamla Kinesiska gravar. I Romarriket användes gafflar flitigt, och det finns många exempel på romerska gafflar på museer i Europa. Gafflar blev populära i Europa, i synnerhet Italien, på 1300-talet, och växte i popularitet framöver. Nordeuropa tog längre tid på sig att anpassa sig och börja använda gafflar, men på 1700-talet spred sig vanan även i Storbritannien, även om vissa påstår att gafflar var vanliga i Frankrike, England och Sverige redan i början av 1600-talet.

Widelec to narzędzie posiadające na jednym końcu uchwyt, a na drugim zębiska; jest używany do nadziewania, utrzymywania i przenoszenia przedmiotów, najczęściej porcji jedzenia w trakcie gotowania i spożywania. Początkowo używany do jedzenia głównie na Zachodzie, podczas gdy na Dalekim Wschodzie dominowały pałeczki. Dzisiaj jednak widelce stają się coraz powszechniej dostępne również tam.
