As a piece of cutlery or kitchenware, a fork is a tool consisting of a handle with several narrow tines (usually two, three or four) on one end. The fork as an eating utensil was a feature primarily of the West, whereas in East Asia chopsticks were more prevalent. Today, however, forks are increasingly available throughout East Asia as well.

Fork est un mot anglais signifiant « fourche », « fourchette ». Il vient du mot latin furca (qui est également à l'origine de plusieurs mots en français comme bifurcation), via le normano-picard forque. C'est souvent dans ce sens figuré « d'embranchement », de « différenciation » qu'est employé cet anglicisme en informatique. Il désigne donc un objet (au sens large, cela peut être un projet) ayant une racine commune avec un second. Ces deux objets jumeaux au départ après s'être séparés suivent une évolution propre, différente.

Essbesteck, kurz Besteck, heißen Werkzeuge, die zur Nahrungsaufnahme verwendet werden. Das heute im europäischen Kulturkreis gebräuchliche Essbesteck besteht aus Messer, Gabel und Löffel. Weit mehr Menschen verwenden als Essbesteck jedoch Essstäbchen (Ostasien). In den meisten Kulturen weltweit wird auf ganz oder teilweise auf Essbesteck verzichtet und mit den Fingern gegessen, meist nach strikten Regeln. Im islamischen Kulturbereich und bei Anhängern des Hinduismus darf nur die rechte Hand zur Nahrungsaufnahme verwendet werden, da mit der linken die Körperreinigung vorgenommen wird und diese daher als unrein gilt.

Fork (z angielskiego, dosłownie rozwidlenie) to sytuacja w której rozwój projektu nie prowadzi już jedną drogą, ale rozwidla się na dwie lub więcej gałęzi.Jedna grupa forków dotyczy projektów których zasięg stał się z praktycznego punktu widzenia za duży. Np. na potrzeby projektu GIMP powstał cały widget toolkit, który został wyforkowany do GTK+. GTK+ ulegało potem dalszym forkom, odłączyły się od niego m.in. GLib i Pango.Inną grupą są specjalne wersje projektu, rozwijane jednak we współpracy z "główną gałęzią", np. wersje Apache czy jądra Linuksa używane w różnych dystrybucjach, czy też CinePaint (dawniej Film Gimp) który odłączył się od GIMP-a.

Widelec to narzędzie posiadające na jednym końcu uchwyt, a na drugim zębiska; jest używany do nadziewania, utrzymywania i przenoszenia przedmiotów, najczęściej porcji jedzenia w trakcie gotowania i spożywania. Początkowo używany do jedzenia głównie na Zachodzie, podczas gdy na Dalekim Wschodzie dominowały pałeczki. Dzisiaj jednak widelce stają się coraz powszechniej dostępne również tam.
