Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone synthesised and secreted by gonadotropes in the anterior pituitary gland. FSH and LH act synergistically in reproduction:In women, in the ovary FSH stimulates the growth of immature Graafian follicles to maturation. As the follicle grows it releases inhibin, which shuts off the FSH production.In men, FSH enhances the production of androgen-binding protein by the Sertoli cells of the testes and is critical for spermatogenesis.

L'hormone folliculo-stimulante, hormone peptidique (glycoprotéine) tirant son nom de l'anglais Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), se compose de deux chaînes (alpha et béta) et a une structure semblable à celle de la LH (Luteinizing Hormone), de la TSH et de l'HCG. La FSH est produite par l'anté-hypophyse, sa sécrétion est stimulée par la GnRH  (Gonado Tropin Releasing Hormone) produite par l'hypothalamus. La sécrétion de GnRH est pulsatile et la fréquence des cycles détermine le rapport des sécrétions de FSH et de LH.

Das follikelstimulierende Hormon (FSH), auch Follitropin, ist ein Glykoprotein und Sexualhormon (Gonadotropin), das bei beiden Geschlechtern in der Adenohypophyse (Vorderlappen der Hirnanhangsdrüse) gebildet wird. Es führt bei der Frau zum Follikelwachstum (Eizellenwachstum im Ovar) und der Follikelreifung (Eizellenreifung) und initiiert beim Mann die Spermatogenese (Spermienbildung).

Wydzielanie jest kontrolowane przez podwzgórzowy czynnik uwalniający - folikuloliberynę (FSH RH). Wydzielanie hormonu u kobiet zależne jest od faz cyklu miesiączkowego. FSH pobudza dojrzewanie pęcherzyków jajnikowych i wydzielanie estrogenów u kobiet, powiększenie cewek nasiennych i wytwarzanie plemników u mężczyzn.

Het follikelstimulerend hormoon (FSH) stimuleert bij de vrouw de ontwikkeling van follikels in de eierstokken. Bij de man bevordert FSH de vorming van zaadcellen in de teelballen door stimulatie van de Sertolicellen. Bepaalde andere geslachtshormonen remmen de hypofyse in de afgifte van FSH (negatieve terugkoppeling).
