It is also the set of practices through which those expressive genres are shared. The academic and usually ethnographic study of folklore is sometimes called folkloristics.

Der Begriff Folklore (engl. folk "Volk" und lore "Überlieferung") umfasst im engeren Sinne die mündlichen Überlieferungen eines bestimmten Volkes. Dazu zählen:  Sprichwörter, Rätsel, Erzählungen, Märchen, Fabeln, Legenden, Reime, Schwänke, Volkslieder, Balladen, Witze oder Beschwörungsformeln. Im weiteren Sinne bezeichnet Folklore die Gesamtheit aller volkstümlichen Überlieferung. Die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit Folklore erfolgt im Rahmen der Volkskunde bzw. der Erzählforschung.

Folklor (ang. folk-lore, tradycja ludu) - ogół cech wspólnych danej społeczności, określający jej charakter, obyczaje, tradycje, kulturę, w tym obrzędowość i sztukę. Termin ten utworzył William Thoms w roku 1846.Badaniem folkloru zajmuje się etnologia, a opisywaniem etnografia. Badania folkloru dostarczają wiedzy historycznej, w tradycji ludu zachowane są ważne informacje, wykorzystywane przez socjologów i antropologów zarówno do analizy przeszłości, jak i interpretowania ciągłości zjawisk społecznych i kulturowych.

Il termine folklore o folclore (dal sassone folk = "popolo", e lore = "sapere"), si riferisce alla scienza che studia le tradizioni arcaiche provenienti dal popolo, tramandate oralmente e riguardanti usi, costumi, leggende e proverbi, musica e danza, riferiti ad una determinata area geografica o ad una determinata popolazione.
