folk rock

Folk rock is a musical genre, combining elements of folk music and rock music. In its earliest and narrowest sense, the term referred to a genre that arose in the United States and Canada around the mid-1960s. The sound was epitomized by tight vocal harmonies and a relatively "clean" (effects- and distortion-free) approach to electric instruments epitomized by the jangly sound of the Byrds' guitarist Roger McGuinn. The repertoire was drawn in part from folk sources, but even more from folk-influenced singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan.

Do najbardziej znanych wykonawców tego nurtu zaliczają się: The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roy Harper, Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, The Albion Band, Pentangle, The Ukrainians, Incredible String Band, Paul Simon, The Pogues, The Waterboys. Il Folk rock è un genere musicale, che unisce gli elementi rock al folk.Il termine è originariamente riferito in senso stretto ad un genere che nasce negli Stati Uniti e in Canada alla metà degli anni '60. In senso più ampio, il folk rock include generi e movimenti musicali ispirati dalla musica popolare nel mondo anglofono e per estensione anche nel resto d'Europa. Come in ogni genere è difficile stabilirne i limiti. Il folk rock può ispirarsi più al rock o al folk per quanto concerne gli strumenti, le armonie vocali, sui temi trattati. Mentre il genere originariamente si riferisce alla musica dei bianchi del Nord America, e quindi delle loro radici Europee, non c'è una linea netta di demarcazione riguardo a quali elementi debbano essere inclusi nella tradizione folk. Comunque il termine non è solitamente applicato alla tradizione blues e ad altri generi degli AfroAmericani, né la musica Sudamericana, né la musica tradizionale non europea, classificata solitamente come world-music o musica etnica.
