foederati

Foederatus (pl. foederati) is a Latin term whose definition and usage drifted in the time between the early Roman Republic and the end of the Western Roman Empire. Early in the history of the Roman Republic, a Foederatus identified one of the tribes bound by treaty (foedus), who were neither Roman colonies nor had they been granted Roman citizenship (civitas) but were expected to provide a contingent of fighting men when trouble arose, thus were allies. The Latini tribe were considered blood allies, but the rest were federates or socii.

Le fœdus (alliance ou pacte en latin) est un traité passé entre l'Empire romain et une cité ou un peuple étranger, qui prend alors le statut de cité fédérée ou de "peuple fédéré". Le mot fœdus dérive du mot latin fides, qui désigne la bonne foi, la parole donnée, notion extrêmement forte dans la Rome antique. Le fœdus est un instrument important de la diplomatie romaine, surtout durant la conquête de la péninsule italienne par la République romaine, et les derniers siècles de l'Empire.

Les peuples fédérés (en latin fœderati) sont pour l'Empire romain des groupes de population ayant passé un traité d'alliance ou de soumission (fœdus) avec l'Empire. Une fois fédéré de Rome, les peuples entrés dans l'Empire sont sommés de cesser leurs exactions en échange de la paix ; il s'agit donc de diplomatie dans le monde antique tardif.

Foederatus (heute oft: Föderatus) war im Römischen Reich jeder Volksstamm, der keine römische Kolonie war, dem auch kein römisches Bürgerrecht (civitas) bewilligt wurde, mit dem Rom aber durch einen Vertrag (foedus) verbunden war, der ein Kontingent von Kriegern zusagte, falls Bedarf bestand. Die Lateiner wurden als Blutsverwandte betrachtet, die übrigen als Verbündete socii.

Federaci (łac. foederati - konfederaci lub sprzymierzeńcy) - barbarzyńskie ludy, które począwszy od IV wieku osiedlano na mocy porozumienia na terytorium cesarstwa rzymskiego. Federaci dostawali ziemię w zamian za obronę państwa, ale często to oni okazywali się największym zagrożeniem (np. Wizygoci osiedleni w Tracji).
