A fixed-wing aircraft is a heavier-than-air craft where movement of the wings in relation to the aircraft is not used to generate lift. The term is used to distinguish from rotary-wing aircraft, or ornithopters, where the movement of the wing surfaces relative to the aircraft generates lift. Fixed-wing aircraft are called airplanes in North America (the U.S. and Canada), and aeroplanes in Commonwealth countries and Ireland (excluding Canada). These terms are derived from Greek αέρας (aéras-) ("air") and -plane.''

Un avion, selon la définition officielle de l'Organisation de l'aviation civile internationale (OACI), est un aéronef plus lourd que l'air, entraîné par un organe moteur (dans le cas d'un engin sans moteur, on parlera de planeur), dont la sustentation en vol est obtenue principalement par des réactions aérodynamiques sur des surfaces qui restent fixes dans des conditions données de vol. Celui ou celle qui le dirige est appelé pilote ou aviateur/aviatrice.

Ein Flugzeug ist ein Luftfahrzeug, das schwerer als Luft ist und für das Fliegen die Erzeugung des Auftriebs und für seine Steuerung aerodynamische Effekte innerhalb der Erdatmosphäre nutzt.Das Prinzip des aerodynamischen Fluges wird durch unterschiedliche Bauweisen verwirklicht, denen gemeinsam ist, dass ein dynamischer Auftrieb erzeugt wird. Im Gegensatz zu Luftfahrzeugen, die leichter als Luft sind und den statischen Auftrieb nutzen (wie Ballone oder Luftschiffe), entsteht der Auftrieb bei Flugzeugen erst, wenn die Luft die festen oder beweglichen Tragflächen umströmt.

L'aeroplano, aeromobile o aereo (in forma abbreviata), è un mezzo di trasporto più pesante dell'aria capace di volare. Tranne pochi modelli sperimentali, in aviazione (o aeronautica) tutti gli aerei costruiti finora hanno in comune l'uso di superfici alari utilizzate per generare una spinta verticale (detta portanza), dalle quali dipende però anche una parte della resistenza all'avanzamento: questo vale in misura analoga per gli elicotteri, detti appunto velivoli ad ala rotante.
