A nail is a horn-like envelope covering the dorsal aspect of the terminal phalanges of fingers and toes in humans, most non-human primates, and a few other mammals. Nails are similar to claws, which are found on numerous other animals. Fingernails and toenails are made of a tough protein called keratin, as are animals' hooves and horns. The mammalian nail, claw, and hoof are all examples of unguis [plural ungues].

Als Nagel (lat. Unguis) wird bei Primaten eine gewölbte, durchscheinende Keratinplatte auf der Oberseite der Finger- oder Zehenspitze bezeichnet, die einerseits dem Schutz der Fingerkuppen, andererseits der Unterstützung der Greiffunktion dient.

Paznokieć (łac. unguis) - rogowa osłona ostatniego członu palca naczelnych i człowieka. Zbudowany jest z tzw. blaszki grzbietowej i blaszki podeszwowej. Paznokieć pełni funkcje ochronne i obronne. Paznokcie są tworami homologicznymi do pazurów, które występują u m.in. drapieżników oraz kopyt występujących u zwierząt kopytnych. Paznokieć różni się od pazura przede wszystkim zanikiem blaszki podeszwowej i słabszym rozwojem blaszki grzbietowej. Blaszka grzbietowa składa się z korzenia paznokcia, który jest zagłębiony w skórze, i właściwego paznokcia, wyrastającego na zewnątrz. Nasadę paznokcia od powierzchni zewnętrznej palca otacza tzw. wał paznokcia. Paznokcie tworzone są w macierzy.
