A fine is money paid as a financial punishment for the commission of minor crimes or as the settlement of a claim. A synonym, typically used in civil law actions, is mulct.One common example of a fine is money paid for violations of traffic laws. Currently in English Common Law relatively small fines are used either in place of or alongside community service orders for low-level criminal offences. Larger fines are also given independently or alongside shorter prison sentences where the judge or magistrate considers a considerable amount of retribution is necessary but there is unlikely to be significant danger to the public. For instance, fraud is often punished by very large fines since fraudsters are typically debarred from the position or profession they abused to commit their crimes.

Oronce Fine, ou encore Oronteus Finæus, Oronce Finé, Orontij Finaei, Oronce Fineo, (1494, Briançon - 1555 ), était un mathématicien et cartographe français qui réalisa la première carte de France imprimée dans ce pays. Sa Protomathesis est un cours de mathématiques pures et appliquées. Il est également l'auteur présumée d'une mappemonde, présentant la Terra Australis : la carte d'Oronce Fine.

Grzywna to kara kryminalna o charakterze majątkowym orzekana za przestępstwa, przestępstwa skarbowe, wykroczenia lub wykroczenia skarbowe.Za przestępstwa wymierza się grzywnę w stawkach dziennych w wymiarze od 10 do 360 (reguła), przy czym wysokość stawki dziennej wynosi od 10 do 2000 złotych.Orzeka się ją jako karę samoistną, gdy ustawa przewiduje ją w przepisie bepośrednio (np. Kto zawiera małżeństwo, pomimo że pozostaje w związku małżeńskim podlega grzywnie... - art. 206 K. k.), następuje zamiana kary na łagodniejszą (art. 58 § 3 K. k.),  nadzwyczajne złagodzenie kary (art. 60 § 6 pkt 2 i 3 K. k.) albo po wydaniu prawomocnego wyroku skazującego na karę pozbawienia wolności czyn, za który skazano nie jest już zagrożony tą karą (art. 4 § 3 K. k.).
