Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize moral ambiguity and sexual motivation. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography, while many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.

Le film noir est plus un courant qu'un genre cinématographique. Il est apparu en 1941 (avec le Faucon maltais) aux États-Unis et fortement inspiré des nouvelles de détective de Dashiell Hammett ou Raymond Chandler, elles-même dérivées du naturalisme, un mouvement littéraire basé sur le réalisme. Il se développe cependant surtout à partir de 1944.

Der Begriff Film noir [] (frz. für „schwarzer Film“) bezeichnet ein Filmgenre oder – aus Sicht anderer Filmwissenschaftler – eine Stilrichtung des Films. Seine klassische Ära hatte der Film noir in den USA der Vierziger- und Fünfzigerjahre. Wurzelnd in der Zeit des ausgehenden Zweiten Weltkriegs und beeinflusst vom deutschen Expressionismus sowie von der Tradition US-amerikanischer Kriminalliteratur stellt der Film noir einen Gegensatz zum konventionellen Hollywood-Kino dar. Er ist gekennzeichnet durch eine pessimistische Weltsicht, düstere Bildgestaltung und entfremdete, verbitterte Charaktere. Sein Stil hat sich teilweise in späteren Filmen („Neo-Noir“, Cyberpunk) wie auch in anderen Medien fortgesetzt.

Film noir (IPA: ) – „czarny film” gangsterski. Przez jednych krytyków uważany jest za nurt w kinie amerykańskim lat 40. i pierwszej połowie lat 50., przez innych za gatunek filmu amerykańskiego. Termin film noir (czarny film) wymyślony został po II wojnie światowej przez francuskiego krytyka filmowego Nino Franka. W 1946 roku we Francji można było jednocześnie obejrzeć Sokoła maltańskiego Johna Hustona (1941), High Sierra Raoula Walsha (1941), Laurę Otta Premingera (1944), Żegnaj, laleczko Edwarda Dmytryka (1944), Podwójne ubezpieczenie Billy’ego Wildera  (1944) i Kobietę w oknie Fritza Langa (1945). Filmy powstałe w pierwszej połowie lat czterdziestych, niezależnie od siebie, niewyświetlane w Europie ze względu na wojnę, oglądane w jednym momencie ukazały wiele wspólnych, nowych jakości formalnych i treściowych, pozwalających na wyodrębnienie nowego zjawiska, które w równym stopniu jak włoski neorealizm wywarło wpływ na powojenne kino. Nino Frank pisał, że obrazy te określane zwykle mianem „filmu detektywistycznego” lub „gangsterskiego”, bardziej zasługują na określenie „przygoda kryminalna” lub „psychologia zbrodni”.

L'espressione film noir fu coniata dalla critica cinematografica francese alla fine della Seconda guerra mondiale quando oltralpe furono distribuiti i film statunitensi girati negli anni '40. I primi critici ad occuparsene furono, nel 1946, Nino Frank e Jean-Pierre Chartier, mentre il primo volume dedicato al genere è del 1955 e porta la firma di Raymond Borde e Etienne Chaumeton: Panorama du film noir américain, 1941-1953.
