Figurehead
For the metaphorical use, see Figurehead (metaphor). A figurehead is a carved wooden decoration, often female or bestial, found at the prow of ships of the 16th to the 19th century. The practice was introduced with the galleons of the 16th century, as although earlier ships had often had some form of bow ornamentation, the figurehead as such could not come to be until ships had an actual head structure upon which to place it.

Galionsfigur
Eine Galionsfigur ist eine meist aus Holz geschnitzte Figur, etwa eine Frauenfigur, die auf Schiffen, vornehmlich Segelschiffen (Windjammer), meist unter dem Bugspriet angebracht wird. Der Begriff leitet sich vom Galion (Spanisch: Balkon) ab, dies ist ein Vorbau in Form eines Balkones, der bei einigen Segelschiffen zu finden ist. Am Galion war die Galionsfigur befestigt. Im Aberglauben von Seeleuten soll die Figur den Kurs des Schiffes beobachten und es vor Unglück bewahren.

Galion (rzezba)
Galion – ozdoba dziobowa stosowana na starych, dużych żaglowcach, w postaci okazałej rzeźby umieszczonej pod bukszprytem. Była to rzeźba drewniana, często polichromowana. Zwykle przedstawiała postać ludzką, zwierzęcą lub inne wymyślone stworzenie, i nawiązywała do nazwy jednostki.

Polena
Una polena è una decorazione lignea, spesso figura femminile o di animale, che si trovava sulla prua delle navi dal XVI al XIX secolo. La pratica fu introdotta inizialmente nei galeoni, ma anche navi più antiche avevano spesso alcune decorazioni nella prua.Come molte delle austere decorazioni del tempo la polena aveva lo scopo di indicare il nome della nave che la ospitava a persone che non sapevano leggere (anche se talvolta in maniera contorta), inoltre avevano lo scopo di mostrare la ricchezza e la forza del proprietario. Durante il periodo Barocco alcune navi vantavano polene gigantesche, pesanti molte tonnellate e talvolta ne portavano persino due, una per ogni lato dell'albero di trinchetto.
