A character is the representation  of a person  in a narrative work of art  (such as a novel, play, or film). Derived from the ancient Greek word kharaktêr, it dates from the Restoration, although it became widely used after its appearance in Tom Jones in 1749. From this, the sense of "a part played by an actor" developed. Character, particularly when enacted by an actor in the theatre or cinema, involves "the illusion of being a human person." In literature, characters guide readers through their stories, helping them to understand plots and ponder themes. Since the end of the 18th century, the phrase "in character" has been used to describe an effective impersonation  by an actor. Since the 19th century, the art of creating characters, as practised by actors or writers, has been called characterisation.

Eine literarische Figur ist eine fiktive Gestalt in einem literarischen Text. Literarische Figuren zeichnen sich durch ihre Charakterisierung aus, die innerhalb des Textes auf verschiedene Art erfolgen kann. Unter anderem ist dies abhängig von der Textgattung: in Prosatexten steht über eine literarische Figur nur eine begrenzte Menge an Informationen zur Verfügung, während dramatischen Figuren durch Schauspieler neue Aspekte hinzugefügt werden können.

Un personnage de fiction, ou caractère, est un être imaginaire issu d'une œuvre de fiction. Le procédé de création et de développement des personnages est appelé la caractérisation.

Postać literacka (porte parole, bohater literacki) – fikcyjna osoba ukazana w świecie przedstawionym dzieła literackiego. Może być tożsama z podmiotem mówiącym dzieła (liryka, narratorzy pamiętników itp.), ale najczęściej jest od niego różna (epika, dramat). Jest uwidoczniana w tekście przez opis - cech wyglądu i charakteru, oraz działań, a także może wyrażać w tekście swoje myśli i odczucia. Natomiast jej sposób zaistnienia w świecie przedstawionym jest uzależniony od motywacji i charakterystyki.
