A vassal or feudatory is a person who has entered into a mutual obligation to a lord or monarch in the context of the feudal system in medieval Europe. The obligations often included military support and mutual protection, in exchange for certain privileges, usually including the grant of land held as a fiefdom. The term can be applied to similar arrangements in other feudal societies. In contrast, a fidelity, or fidelitas, was a sworn loyalty, subject to the king.

Ein Vasall (Keltisch gwas, lat. vassus: Knecht) war im frühen Mittelalter (6.-7. Jahrhundert) ein Herr, der sich freiwillig als Gefolgsmann in den Dienst eines anderen Herrn stellte und sich diesem für bestimmte militärische oder diplomatische Dienstleistungen verpflichtete. Der Vasall musste eine bestimmte Anzahl an Soldaten zur Verfügung stellen, um somit den Dienstherrn in dessen Krieg zu unterstützen. Die Lehnspflicht bestand aber auch aus Abgaben, zum Beispiel für die herrschaftlichen Kriegsdienste, oder aus ähnlichen Leistungen. Der Vasall genoss den Schutz seines Lehnsherren.

Le système féodo-vassalique s’est développé à cause de l’affaiblissement de l’autorité publique après l’effondrement de l’empire carolingien ( - ) : l’empereur, les rois et bientôt les princes territoriaux étaient incapables de faire régner l’ordre et d’imposer leur pouvoir aux seigneurs locaux. Un réseau de relations d’homme à homme s’impose donc, donnant des droits et des devoirs pour chacun d’entre eux, une pyramide sociale allant théoriquement du roi au grand seigneur (grand feudataire), seigneur, vassal et arrière-vassal ( Vavasseur ) mais dont l'effectivité dépend de l'autorité du supérieur.

Wasal – początkowo (wczesne średniowiecze) wolny oddający się w opiekę seniorowi w akcie komendacji. W zamian za lenno wasal zobowiązywał się służyć wiernie seniorowi radą i pomocą orężną. Uroczystą ceremonią przekazania lenna była inwestytura. Później wasal to osoba, która złożyła hołd i przysięgę na wierność. Z uwagi na obowiązywanie zasady w feudalizmie europejskim "Wasal mojego wasala nie jest moim wasalem", stosunki lenne tworzyły skomplikowaną strukturę społeczną na terenach kontynentalnej Europy.
