FERN, the Forests and the European Union Resource Network, is an international non-governmental organization created in 1995 to keep track of the EU’s involvement in forests and to co-ordinate NGO activities at the European level. Through its work, FERN aims to increase the political and economic opportunities for people to create a more balanced society in which human rights are fully respected and environmental and social values are fully integrated.

A fern is any one of a group of about 20,000 species of plants classified in the phylum or division Pteridophyta, also known as Filicophyta. The group is also referred to as polypodiophyta, or polypodiopsida when treated as a subdivision of tracheophyta (vascular plants). The study of ferns is called pteridology, and one who studies ferns is called a pteridologist. The term "pteridophyte" has traditionally been used to describe all seedless vascular plants, making it synonymous with "ferns and fern allies". This can be confusing since members of the fern phylum Pteridophyta are also sometimes referred to as pteridophytes.

Les Filicophytes, communément appelées fougères, sont des cryptogames vasculaires. Elles comportent environ  espèces (le plus grand embranchement végétal après les angiospermes). On rencontre environ les trois-quarts des espèces dans les régions tropicales et une bonne proportion de ces fougères tropicales est épiphyte.

Die Farne sind eine Gruppe von Gefäßsporenpflanzen, die die Schwestergruppe der Samenpflanzen bilden. Die Farne umfassen alle Gefäßsporenpflanzen außer den Bärlapppflanzen: die Schachtelhalme, Gabelblattgewächse, Natternzungen, Echte Farne und Marattiaceae. Sie werden häufig als Monilophyten bezeichnet, die Bezeichnungen Monilophyta oder Moniloformopses sind jedoch keine gültigen Taxon-Bezeichnungen.

Forests and the European Union Resource Network (FERN) ist eine europäische Umwelt-NGO mit Sitz in Brüssel, die sich im Bereich der Forstpolitik der EU betätigt. Sie wurde im Jahre 1995 vom World Rainforest Movement gegründet und kooriniert eine Reihe europäischer Netzwerke von NGOs. FERN versteht sich als Mittler zwischen NGOs und der EU, und beobachtet und informiert andere Organisationen und interessiere Privatpersonen über relevante Entwicklungen auf EU-Ebene. Die Organisation ist auch für die Publikation einiger Studien zu forstpolitischen Fragestellungen bekannt, denen sich andere NGOs bedienen, z.B. zu Fragen  forstlicher Zertifizierung.

Najprawdopodobniej pochodzą od trymerofitów.Niektórzy badacze uznają paprotniki za takson parafiletyczny, wchodzące w jej skład klasy podnoszą do rangi gromad, a nazwę paprotniki stosują jako termin morfologiczno-ekologiczny, a nie taksonomiczny.

Le Pteridofite, dette anche Crittogame vascolari o Cormofite crittogame, sono piante già evolute che comprendono un fusto, delle vere radici e foglie, e dei vasi. Sono difatti le prime piante terrestri che hanno cominciato a differenziare un sistema di trasporto dei fluidi, permettendo così un ulteriore accrescimento in altezza(a differenza delle Briofite che, essendo le piante terrestri meno evolute non sono riuscite ad affrancarsi totalmente dalla vita acquatica). Le Pteridofite sono organismi aplodiplonti con alternanza di generazioni antitetiche eteromorfiche con netto predominio dello sporofito sul gametofito.
