Das Phenol (IUPAC: Benzenol) ist der einfachste Vertreter der Phenole. Phenole sind organische Verbindungen, in denen mindestens eine Hydroxygruppe direkt an einem aromatischen Ring gebunden ist. Phenol ist ein Derivat des Benzols. Phenol wurde im Jahr 1834 vom Chemiker Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge bei der Destillation von Steinkohlenteer entdeckt.
