Antipyretics ; an-tee-pahy-ret-iks; from the Greek anti, against, and pyreticus, (pertaining to fever) are drugs or herbs that reduce fever. Normally, they will not lower body temperature in case one has a high fever. Antipyretics cause the hypothalamus to override an interleukin-induced increase in temperature. The body then works to lower the temperature, resulting in a reduction in fever.

Ein Antipyretikum ist ein fiebersenkendes oder vor Fieber schützendes Mittel. Ein solcher Wirkstoff wird als antipyretisch bezeichnet. Meist wird es als Komponente von Analgetika verabreicht. Es hemmt die Prostaglandin-E2-Synthese im Hypothalamus. Dadurch kommt es zur erhöhten Wärmeabgabe durch Erweiterung der Hautgefäße und vermehrter Schweißsekretion, wodurch der Körper „entfiebert“ wird. Fiebersenkend wirken vor allem Metamizol (Novalgin, Novaminsulfon), Paracetamol und Acetylsalicylsäure (Aspirin, ASS) sowie das nicht mehr eingesetzte Acetanilid.
