Fashion is a term that usually applies to a prevailing mode of expression, but quite often applies to a personal mode of expression that may or may not apply to all. Inherent in the term is the idea that the mode will change more quickly than the culture as a whole. The terms "fashionable" and "unfashionable" are employed to describe whether someone or something fits in with the current popular mode of expression. The term "fashion" is frequently used in a positive sense, as a synonym for glamour and style. In this sense, fashions are a sort of communal art, through which a culture examines its notions of beauty and goodness. The term "fashion" is also sometimes used in a negative sense, as a synonym for fads, trends, and materialism. Fashion capital cities are actually Milan, Paris, New York, but other cities like Rome, Tokyo and London are becoming very famous.

La mode (ou les modes), et plus précisément la mode vestimentaire, désigne la manière de se vêtir, conformément au goût d'une époque dans une région donnée. C'est un phénomène impliquant le collectif via la société, le regard qu'elle renvoie, les codes qu'elle impose et le goût individuel.

Moda – w potocznym rozumieniu oznacza potrzebę naśladowania innych aby się identyfikować z nimi, ta psychiczna potrzeba najdobitniej jest widoczna w ubiorze. Moda występuje także w innych dziedzinach życia społecznego. Wiąże się z pojęciem stylu ale nie jest jego synonimem podobnie jak pojęcie elegancji. Może być modny ubiór, wygląd, sposób zachowania, ale także styl muzyczny, styl artystyczny, światopogląd czy pewien sposób postępowania, czyli ogólnie rzecz biorąc livestyle, który jest popularny w jakimś czasie w jakimś środowisku. W węższym znaczeniu słowo moda odnosi się do projektowania ubioru. Moda zawsze posiada swoją awangardę, czyli grupę, która pierwsza inicjuje naśladownictwo czegoś, najczęściej form ubioru. Natomiast styl w modzie jest związany z indywidualnym przystosowanym do potrzeb psychicznych określonego użytkownika sposobem wyrażania siebie poprzez formę ubioru.
