Ugly Betty ist eine US-amerikanische Adaption der kolumbianischen Telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea (deutsch: Ich bin Betty, die Hässliche) aus dem Jahr 2006, und gleichzeitig der erfolgreichste Serien-Neustart der Saison für den US-Fernsehgiganten ABC. Ähnlich wie in der deutschen Version der Erfolgsserie, Verliebt in Berlin, geht es hier um das Mauerblümchen Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), die als Assistentin ihrem attraktiven Juniorchef (Eric Mabius) zugeteilt wird. Im Gegensatz zur deutschen Telenovela verliebt sie sich jedoch nicht in ihn und auch ansonsten unterscheidet „Ugly Betty“ sich von „Verliebt in Berlin“.
