Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. The genre is generally distinguished from science fiction and horror by overall look, feel, and theme of the individual work, though there is a great deal of overlap between the three (collectively known as speculative fiction). In its broadest sense, fantasy comprises works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians, from ancient myths and legends to many recent works embraced by a wide audience today.

Fantasy (z ang. fantazja) - młody gatunek literacki powstały na gruncie fantastyki. Obok fantastyki naukowej i horroru jest jednym z jej najszerzej reprezentowanych gatunków współczesnych.Utwory tego gatunku są najczęściej umiejscowione w fikcyjnym świecie, w którym poza zwykłymi prawami fizyki i biologii działa też magia oraz inne nadnaturalne moce. Do świata przedstawionego należy przeważnie rozległy zestaw rekwizytów swobodnie zaczerpniętych ze średniowiecza i starożytności, rzadziej z okresu renesansu lub epoki wczesnoprzemysłowej. Charakterystyczne jest także występowanie obok gatunku ludzkiego istot mitycznych lub baśniowych. Zazwyczaj psychologia postaci, ich motywacje i zachowania są przedstawione realistycznie - dotyczy to także postaci o proweniencji mityczno-baśniowej. Świat w książkach fantasy jest fikcyjny, mitologiczny lub baśniowy, czasem mniej lub bardziej umowny, ale potraktowany przez autora jak świat historyczny, który się kiedyś zdarzył, jak kronika, i stąd wynika niezwykła moc oddziaływania tego gatunku, poprzez uprawdopodobnienie postaci i wielką precyzję opisu ich świata.

Fantasy è un termine, mutuato dalla lingua inglese, con il quale si indica un genere letterario, nato nell'ottocento, i cui elementi dominanti sono il mito e la fiaba.Al contrario della narrativa fantastica tout court, che affronta l'intrusione vera o supposta dell'elemento fantastico nella nostra realtà, il fantasy descrive mondi o dimensioni immaginarie completamente avulse dal nostro mondo.Quale genere, il fantasy viene di volta in volta associato o contrapposto sia alla fantascienza che all'horror. Tutti e tre i generi contengono elementi fantastici, con ampi scostamenti dalla realtà (o considerazioni estreme sulla natura della realtà, presente o passata). Vari scrittori e critici anglosassoni preferiscono usare il termine cumulativo di speculative fiction (narrativa speculativa) a causa della sempre più frequente contaminazione tra i generi.
