Extreme metal is an umbrella term, somewhat loosely defined, for a variety of heavy metal subgenres developed since the 1980s. Though the term does not refer to any specific style or sound, it most commonly refers to music which either is a member of, or incorporates elements of, genres such as death metal, black metal, grindcore, or some types of doom metal or thrash metal.
