Symbolem EP oznacza się płyty muzyczne (kompaktowe albo winylowe), które są zbyt długie by nazwać je singlem (do trzech utworów, poniżej 10 minut), ale zbyt krótkie by zakwalifikować je jako pełnoprawny album długogrający - LP (co najmniej osiem piosenek, powyżej 25 minut). Czasami stosuje się termin MCD oznaczający minialbum wydany na płycie kompaktowej.

Extended Play (o EP) è il nome dato nel settore discografico ai dischi in vinile o ai CD la cui durata sia superiore a un singolo e inferiore a un album.Solitamente un EP in vinile contiene quattro tracce e gira a 45 giri. Se invece gira a 33 giri si usa la denominazione Q Disc. Quando le tracce cominciano ad essere cinque o più ci si trova più propriamente davanti ad un mini album, mentre nel caso di 45 giri con tre canzoni vengono usate altre denominazioni (in genere disco tris) e, comunque, viene seguita la stessa numerazione di catalogo dei 45 giri (mentre gli Extended Play seguono una numerazione propria).

De afkorting ep (Engels: EP of E.P.) staat voor extended play. Door een single-grammofoonplaat niet op 45 maar op 33 1/3 toeren af te spelen werd het mogelijk de speelduur te verlengen. Oorspronkelijk werd de term dus gebruikt voor verlengde singles, tegenwoordig wordt deze nog vooral gebruikt voor geluidsdragers (dus ook cd's) met materiaal dat te lang is om een single genoemd te worden en te kort om als volwaardig album door het leven te gaan. De gebruikelijke lengte voor een ep is zo'n 15 tot 35 minuten.
