Exocytosis (; from Greek ἔξω "out" and English cyto- "cell" from Gk. κύτος "receptacle") is the durable process by which a cell directs the contents of secretory vesicles out of the cell membrane. These membrane-bound vesicles contain soluble proteins to be secreted to the extracellular environment, as well as membrane proteins and lipids that are sent to become components of the cell membrane.

L'exocytose (du grec -exo "hors de" et de -kutos "cavité, cellule") est le mécanisme par lequel la cellule libère de larges biomolécules à travers sa membrane. L’exocytose a lieu quand des vésicules de transport ou de sécrétion fusionnent avec la membrane plasmique et que leur contenu sort dans le milieu extracellulaire. Exemple: expulsion des neuromédiateurs des vésicules synaptiques vers le milieu extracellulaire.

Exocytos är den process där cellerna utsöndrar stora biomolekyler genom att innesluta dem i en vesikel som sedan avknoppas från dess cellmembran. Exocytos kan verka för att utsöndra avfallsprodukter hos encelliga organismer (protozoa). Hos flercelliga organismer har exocytos även signalerande och regulatorisk funktion. Motsatsen till exocytos är endocytos, då stora biomolekyler tas in i cellen.

Egzocytoza (egzo- + gr. kýtos (komórka), inaczej cytopempsja) - proces uwalniania metabolitów powstających wewnątrz komórki (na przykład hormonów, neurotransmiterów, enzymów), ale także i produktów ubocznych metabolizmu i wydalin do przestrzeni pozakomórkowej. Proces ten zachodzi na drodze fuzji pęcherzyków transportujących metabolity z błoną komórkową od wewnątrz, co skutkuje wyrzuceniem ich zawartości do środowiska pozakomórkowego. Za przebieg tego procesu oraz za wyznaczanie miejsc egzocytozy odpowiedzialne są kompleksy egzocystu.
