Exegesis (from the Greek  from 'to lead out') is a critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially a religious text. Traditionally the term was used primarily for exegesis of the Bible; however, in contemporary usage it has broadened to mean a critical explanation of any text, and the term "Biblical exegesis" is used for greater specificity. The goal of Biblical exegesis is to explore the meaning of the text which then leads to discovering its significance or relevance.

Die Exegese (griech.:  exegesis = „Auslegung“, „Erläuterung“) ist die Interpretation von Texten. Im Alltagssprachgebrauch wird der Ausdruck meist mit Bezug auf heilige Schriften verwendet, vor allem des Talmuds, der Literatur zum Midrasch, des Korans und des Alten und Neuen Testaments der Bibel. Der Ausdruck ist auch im Zusammenhang mit der Auslegung juristischer oder irgendwelcher anderer Texte anzutreffen.

L'exégèse (exégesis en grec : « mener hors de ») est une étude approfondie et critique de n'importe quel document, le plus souvent littéraire. On pratique donc l'exégèse comme un travail préalable à l'édition sur les travaux de tous les auteurs contemporains comme anciens.

Egzegeza ( eksegesis - "wyjaśnienie, wyprowadzenie") – badanie i krytyczna interpretacja tekstów, zwłaszcza świętych i utworów  hagiograficznych (opowiadających o żywotach świętych). Egzegeza jest sztuką rozumienia i wykładnia ukrytych w utworach prawd, alegorii, symbolicznych kodów sensów teologicznych; poznawanie warstwy metaforycznej. Egzegeza biblijna jest ważną częścią chrześcijańskich studiów teologicznych.
