Ethanol (ook ethylalcohol) is de bekendste alcohol uit de scheikunde; het is namelijk de alcohol die in alcoholische dranken zit. In het dagelijkse spraakgebruik heet ethanol simpelweg alcohol.Alcohol was al bekend bij de inwoners van Sumerië, zo'n 5000 jaar voor Christus. In alle tijden is er alcohol gedronken.
