Etching is the process of using strong acid to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio in the metal (the original process - in modern manufacturing other chemicals may be used on other types of material). As an intaglio method of printmaking, it is, along with engraving, the most important technique for old master prints, and remains widely used today.

L’eau-forte est un procédé de la gravure en creux sur plaque métallique. « Cette appellation elle-même est celle de l’acide nitrique étendu d’eau : l’aqua-fortis des anciens alchimistes .». Akwaforta, kwasoryt (wł. acquaforte – mocna woda czyli  kwas azotowy) – technika  graficzna wklęsła, także odbitka otrzymana tą techniką.Polega na wykonaniu metalowej formy drukowej z rysunkiem uzyskanym za pomocą trawienia. Płytę miedzianą lub cynkową pokrywa się nierozpuszczalnym w kwasie werniksem akwafortowym i następnie wykonuje się rysunek stalową igłą odsłaniając powierzchnię metalu. Przez zanurzenie płyty w kwasie następuje wytrawienie wgłębnego rysunku na płycie. W celu pogłębienia kresek w partiach ciemnych rysunku proces ten powtarza się kilkakrotnie. Po ostatnim trawieniu i usunięciu werniksu w płytę wciera się farbę drukową, która zatrzymuje się tylko w wytrawionych zagłębieniach. Wciśnięta w wytrawione zagłębienia płyty farba przeniesiona zostaje pod naciskiem w prasie wklęsłodrukowej na papier.

Een ets is een diepdruktechniek waarbij getekend wordt op een met vernis afgedekte koperen of zinken plaat. De tekening wordt vervolgens ingebeten in zuur en op vochtig papier afgedrukt.
