Esters are a class of chemical compounds and functional groups. Esters consist of an inorganic or organic acid in which at least one -OH (hydroxy) group is replaced by an -O-alkyl (alkoxy) group. The most common type of esters are carboxylic acid esters (R1-C(=O)-O-R2), other esters include phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and boric acid esters. Volatile esters often have a smell and are found in perfumes, essential oils, and pheromones and give many fruits their scent. Ethyl acetate and methyl acetate are important solvents, fatty acid esters form fat and lipids, and polyesters are important plastics. Cyclic esters are called lactones. The name "ester" is derived from the German Essig-Äther (literally:vinegar ether), an old name for ethyl acetate. Esters can be synthesized in a condensation reaction between an acid and an alcohol in a reaction known as esterification.

Estry - grupa organicznych związków chemicznych będąca produktem kondensacji kwasów karboksylowych i alkoholi. Estrami nazywa się też produkty kondensacji alkoholi i kwasów nieorganicznych.Bezpośrednia reakcja między kwasem karboksylowym i alkoholem nazywa się estryfikacją. Reakcja ta jest odwracalna, zachodzi w środowisku kwaśnym.Oprócz bezpośredniej syntezy z kwasu karboksylowego i alkoholu można je też otrzymywać w wyniku reakcji chlorków kwasowych lub bezwodników kwasów karboksylowych z alkoholami oraz w wyniku reakcji transestryfikacji – czyli reakcji wymiany jednego estru z drugim.

Estry to miejscowość i gmina we Francji, w regionie Dolna Normandia, w departamencie Calvados.Według danych na rok 1990 gminę zamieszkiwały 322 osoby, a gęstość zaludnienia wynosiła 30 osób/km² (wśród 1815 gmin  Dolnej Normandii Estry plasuje się na 575. miejscu pod względem liczby ludności, natomiast pod względem powierzchni na miejscu 458.).

Gli esteri sono composti organici prodotti dalla reazione di acilazione di un alcol o di un fenolo con acido carbossilico o un suo derivato. La molecola degli esteri ha questa struttura caratteristica: R1 | C=O | O | R2 dove R1 e R2 sono le restanti parti della molecola. Vengono denominati esteri anche i prodotti dell'acilazione degli alcoli con altri acidi inorganici, che danno origine alla famiglia degli esteri inorganici, che hanno proprietà chimiche molto simili agli esteri organici ma la cui struttura caratteristica è leggermente diversa da questa. La nomenclatura degli esteri segue quella dei sali degli acidi reagenti, quindi avremo, per esempio:CH3COOC2H5 acetato di etile;C17H35COOCH3 palmitato di metile;
