L'estate astronomica ha inizio il giorno del solstizio d'estate (20 o 21 giugno, nell'emisfero australe il 21 o 22 dicembre) e termina nel giorno dell'equinozio d'autunno (22 o 23 settembre, nell'emisfero australe 20 o 21 marzo). Si tratta del periodo dell'anno in cui sole, raggiunto il suo punto più alto sull'orizzonte, il 20 giugno, appunto, inizia a scendere, fino al 22 settembre, appunto, giorno dell'equinozio d'autunno, quando la durata del giorno è uguale a quella della notte. Durante l'estate astronomica si raggiungono, le temperature più alte, in media nella seconda metà di luglio, ma a tale riguardo, non bisogna confonderla con l'estate meteorologica.

De Franse term voor stationwagen is break (Nederlandse uitspraak: breek). Mogelijk is deze term afkomstig uit Nederland, waar een rijtuig met vier wielen en meerdere banken met zitplaatsen een brik genoemd werd. Anderzijds zou de term ook uit het Engels kunnen komen. Een break is volgens de Oxford English Dictionary een rijtuig. De gangbare Engelse term voor stationcar is echter estate.
